The best time to visit Türkiye for most first-time travellers is April to early June or September to October. The weather is warm but not hot, the sea is swimmable in autumn, and Istanbul and Cappadocia are more comfortable than in peak summer.
But Türkiye is a big country with very different climates. The Black Sea is green and rainy, the south coast is hot and dry, and the east has real winters. Here is how the year looks month by month.

- Istanbul: April–May and September–October.
- Cappadocia: April–June and September–October; winter for snow scenery.
- Mediterranean and Aegean coast: late May–June and September–October for warm sea without peak crowds.
- Southeast (Mardin, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep): October–April; summers are extremely hot.
- Eastern Anatolia and the Black Sea: June–September; Kars and the Eastern Express in winter for snow.
January and February
Cold and quiet. Istanbul is often grey and rainy, with occasional snow. Cappadocia can be covered in snow, which is beautiful, but balloon flights are cancelled more often. This is the season for ski resorts such as Uludağ and Erzurum, and for the snowy journey to Kars. Prices are at their lowest.
March
Changeable weather, but the first mild days begin on the coast. A good month for city breaks and ancient sites without crowds.
April
One of the best months. Istanbul's tulips bloom in its parks, especially in Emirgan, and temperatures are ideal for walking. Cappadocia's valleys turn green. The sea is still cool.
May
Arguably the best month overall: warm, green and not yet busy. Excellent for combining Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean ruins such as Ephesus. The sea starts to warm up by the end of the month.
June
Summer begins. The coast is warm and swimmable, days are long, and Cappadocia still has comfortable mornings. Crowds build towards the end of the month.
July and August
Peak season. The coast is hot and busy, and inland sites such as Ephesus and Pamukkale are best visited at opening time. It is the perfect season for the Black Sea highlands, Lake Van and the cooler east. Book hotels well in advance.
September
Our favourite month for the coast: the sea is at its warmest, the heat eases and school holidays are over. Istanbul becomes pleasant again.
October
Excellent everywhere except the high east. Warm days on the coast, golden light in Cappadocia and comfortable city weather. A great month for the southeast, including Göbekli Tepe.
November
Quiet and mild on the coast, cooler inland. Many beach hotels close. A good month for Istanbul museums and southeastern food cities.
December
Winter returns. In Konya, the Şeb-i Arus commemoration of Rumi's death draws visitors for the whirling ceremonies. Istanbul is festive around the New Year, and Cappadocia may have its first snow.
Religious Holidays and Ramadan
Ramadan and the two major holidays (Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı) move about 11 days earlier each year. During the holidays, domestic travel peaks and some businesses close for a few days. Ramadan itself rarely affects visitors, and evenings are especially atmospheric. Check the dates for your year before booking.
