Istanbul Itinerary for a First Visit: 3, 5 or 7 Days Done Right

By Itinerary of Türkiye · Published 25 September 2026 · 8 min read

For a first visit, three full days is the minimum for Istanbul, five is comfortable, and seven lets you add the Princes' Islands or a day trip. The key is not how much you see but the order: historic peninsula first, the Bosphorus by boat, then one neighbourhood on each side of the water.

Below are three itineraries we use as a starting point with first-time couples. They are built around opening hours, walking distances and crowd patterns — not around a checklist.

Before You Plan: Four Things That Shape Every Istanbul Itinerary

  • Weekly closures: Topkapı Palace is generally closed on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe Palace on Mondays, and the Grand Bazaar on Sundays. Always check the official schedule for the week you travel.
  • Prayer times: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are working mosques. Tourist visits pause during prayers, and Friday midday is the busiest time to avoid.
  • Traffic: crossing the city by car at rush hour can take over an hour. Trams, the metro and ferries are often faster.
  • Where you stay: Sultanahmet keeps you close to the historic sights; Karaköy and Galata put you nearer to restaurants and evening life.

Istanbul in 3 Days

Day 1 — The historic peninsula. Start at Hagia Sophia at opening time, then the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome. After lunch, visit the Basilica Cistern and end the day at Topkapı Palace, leaving at least three hours for it.

Day 2 — Bazaars and the Bosphorus. Walk through the Grand Bazaar in the morning, continue downhill through the market streets to the Spice Bazaar, and see Süleymaniye Mosque on the way. In the afternoon, take a Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü and watch the palaces and waterside mansions slide past.

Day 3 — Galata and the Asian side. Walk up to Galata Tower and along İstiklal Avenue, then take the ferry to Kadıköy for its food market and a relaxed evening on the Asian side.

Istanbul in 5 Days

Follow the three-day plan, then add:

  • Day 4 — Balat and Fener: colourful streets, historic churches and synagogues, and the Chora (Kariye) mosaics nearby. Finish with a sunset over the Golden Horn.
  • Day 5 — Dolmabahçe Palace in the morning, then the Bosphorus villages of Ortaköy, Bebek and Arnavutköy for lunch by the water.

Istanbul in 7 Days

With a full week, slow down and add two very different days:

  • The Princes' Islands: a ferry ride to Büyükada, where there are no private cars, pine woods and old wooden mansions.
  • A day trip: Bursa, the first Ottoman capital, for İskender kebab and thermal baths — or Edirne for the Selimiye Mosque. Both work better with an overnight stay.

The Mistakes That Cost First-Time Visitors the Most

  • Trying to do the historic peninsula in half a day. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Cistern and Topkapı together are a full day.
  • Arriving at major sights at midday. Opening time and late afternoon are much calmer.
  • Taking taxis everywhere. The T1 tram and the ferries are faster, cheaper and part of the experience.
  • Staying only in Sultanahmet. The city's real life is in Karaköy, Kadıköy, Balat and along the Bosphorus.
  • Skipping the Asian side. It takes 20 minutes by ferry and shows you how locals actually live.

Where Istanbul Fits in a Longer Türkiye Trip

Most first-time visitors combine Istanbul with Cappadocia: a one-hour flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir, and two or three nights among the valleys and balloons. A classic 7-day Türkiye trip is four days in Istanbul and three in Cappadocia.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Istanbul?

Three full days covers the main historic sights, a Bosphorus cruise and one neighbourhood on the Asian side. Five days is more comfortable, and seven lets you add the Princes' Islands or a day trip to Bursa or Edirne.

What is the best order to see Istanbul's sights?

Start with the historic peninsula — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace — then the bazaars and a Bosphorus cruise, and finally Galata and the Asian side.

Is 2 days enough for Istanbul?

Two days is enough to see the historic peninsula and take a Bosphorus cruise, but it is rushed. If you can, add a third day.

Which day is the Grand Bazaar closed?

The Grand Bazaar is generally closed on Sundays and on some religious holidays. Check the schedule for your travel dates.
