Every December, Konya marks the death of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, who died in the city on 17 December 1273. His followers do not call it a death but a reunion with the Beloved, which is why the commemoration is known as Şeb-i Arus, the "wedding night". The centrepiece is the Mevlevi sema, the ceremony of the whirling dervishes. In 2026 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism holds the 753rd anniversary ceremonies from 7 to 17 December, and tickets have been on sale since 9 October. This guide separates what is officially confirmed from what is only reported, helps you pick a session and sets out a booking order and a checklist.
What is officially confirmed
The Ministry's Şeb-i Arus ticket information page confirms four things: the event is the 753rd Vuslat anniversary commemoration; it runs from 7 to 17 December 2026; the sema ceremonies take place in the Sema Hall of the Konya Mevlana Cultural Center; and tickets are sold through Biletinial, with sales having opened on Friday 9 October 2026 at 10:00. The same page says that the cultural and arts programme in other halls during the ceremonies is free, and that a programme booklet will be published for download once it is ready. When we checked, it had not yet appeared.
A note on numbering: you may find a Biletinial page titled "751. Vuslat Yıldönümü". That is the listing for the 2024 edition, not this year's. Counting from 1273, 2026 is the 753rd anniversary, which matches the Ministry page. Make sure the event you book says 753.
Sessions and prices: reported, not yet official
The Ministry page does not list daily times or prices. Doğayı Dinle, reporting from the ticket platform's schedule, gives this pattern, which it says may change:
- Monday 7 December (opening night): one evening session, reported at 19:00.
- Tuesday 8 to Friday 11 December: evening sessions, reported at 20:00.
- Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December: two sessions each day, reported at 14:00 and 20:00.
- Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 December: evening sessions, reported at 20:00.
- Thursday 17 December (the anniversary itself): one session, reported at 14:00, in the afternoon rather than the evening.
The same report says the platform shows prices "from 300 TL" and that this need not apply to every date or seat category. It also says tickets are sold per date and session, and that you should not assume a single pass covers every date. Confirm the exact time, hall and price on your ticket before you build anything around it.
Choosing your date
- Opening night, 7 December: a sense of occasion and an earlier start. Reported as a single session, and the report notes that availability changes as sales progress, so book early.
- The anniversary, 17 December: the date with the most meaning. If the afternoon timing holds, you can travel in that morning only with a very safe margin; arriving the day before is the calmer plan.
- The weekend of 12–13 December: two sessions a day give more choice and allow an afternoon ceremony followed by an evening in the old town.
- Weeknights, 8–11 and 14–16 December: usually the easiest to fit around a wider trip. A good choice if you care more about seeing the sema than about a particular date.
- Flexible? Pick a date that leaves a full day in Konya on either side of the ceremony for the Mevlana Museum and the old town.
Understanding what you are attending
The sema is a religious commemoration, not a stage show. UNESCO, which inscribed the Mevlevi sema ceremony on its intangible heritage list in 2008, describes music from at least a singer, a ney (reed flute) player, a kettledrummer and a cymbal player, and whirlers who rotate on the left foot with their eyes open but unfocused. It also notes that many semas staged for tourists have been shortened and simplified. The Şeb-i Arus ceremonies are the Ministry's annual commemoration, held in Konya where the order began. GoTürkiye explains that the ceremony begins with praise of the Prophet Muhammad, and that the sheikh's red post, the sheepskin on which he sits, stands for the sunset at which Rumi was reunited with God.
Behave as you would at any religious service. Stay quiet, keep your phone silent and dark, and take your cue from the hall rather than treating the end of a section as a moment to clap. Photography and filming rules are not published on the official page, so follow the announcements in the hall and any instructions on your ticket. Rules attached to the 2024 Biletinial listing asked attendees to be in the hall at least an hour before the start, said doors close once the programme begins, and did not admit children under six. Check whether the 2026 listing says the same before you travel with a family.
Getting to Konya and to the hall
By rail, Konya is on the high-speed (YHT) network. Seat61 lists direct YHT services from Istanbul's Söğütlüçeşme station of around 4 hours 40 minutes, and Ankara–Konya journeys of under two hours. Trains arrive at Konya Selçuklu YHT station, which is about 4 km from the old Konya station, on the other side of the city. Book on TCDD Taşımacılık's ticketing site. Our Istanbul–Ankara YHT booking checklist walks through the general booking steps, so we won't repeat them here. Seat61 notes that booking normally opens about 60 days ahead, which means December dates should already be bookable; check the actual trains for your date rather than relying on a past timetable, and book early for the evening of the ceremony.
If you would rather fly, check flights into Konya and the airport-to-city transfer for your arrival time before choosing air over rail; we have not verified those connections here. Whichever way you arrive, plan the last leg to the Mevlana Cultural Center as carefully as the main journey: GoTürkiye places it about a kilometre from the Mevlana Museum, so a hotel near the museum puts you within walking distance in dry weather. Check the forecast and dress for a cold December evening, since you may be waiting outside before the doors open. Our winter travel guide and month-by-month guide help with the wider December plan, and our Konya destination page covers the city itself.
Booking timeline and checklist
- First, the ticket: choose a date and session on Biletinial, check that the event title says 753 and the venue says Mevlana Cultural Center, and keep a screenshot of the ticket terms.
- Then transport: book YHT seats or a flight that arrives well before the doors open; for a 14:00 session, arriving the day before is safer.
- Then the hotel: stay near the Mevlana Museum or the cultural centre so the walk to the hall is short.
- Plan the Mevlana Museum separately. Admission and opening hours are not covered here; check the Ministry's museum portal (muze.gov.tr) and expect larger crowds during the ceremony period.
- Watch the Ministry page for the programme booklet and the free events in other halls.
- Note the refund rule Doğayı Dinle reports from the platform's terms: online tickets not printed at the box office can be cancelled up to 48 hours before the event, under conditions that depend on whether you bought as a member or as a guest. Check the current terms at checkout.
