The most common insurance mistake in medical tourism is assuming a standard travel policy covers the trip's actual purpose. It usually does not: planned medical treatment abroad is a routine exclusion. Real protection comes from three layers — the clinic's written guarantee, specialised medical travel insurance, and a clear complication protocol.
Layer 1: The Clinic's Written Guarantee
Reputable Turkish clinics back their work with a guarantee document. Read it like a contract: what exactly is covered (revision surgery? repeat grafts? replacement restorations?), for how long, what voids it (smoking, missed aftercare?), and — critically — who pays for travel and accommodation if you must return. A guarantee that only waives the surgeon's fee while you pay flights and hotel is worth knowing about in advance.
Layer 2: Specialised Medical Travel Insurance
A niche but growing market of insurers covers complications of planned treatment abroad — typically emergency treatment costs arising from complications, extended stays, and sometimes repatriation. Standard exclusions still apply to elective revisions and dissatisfaction with aesthetic results. If your procedure is significant, ask your clinic and your own insurer what products exist for your nationality; policies must be arranged before treatment, never after.
Layer 3: The Complication Protocol
- A named clinic contact reachable after you return home
- The clinic's process for remote assessment (photos, video calls)
- Which local providers in your home country they cooperate with, if any
- Who covers what when a complication needs in-person care — in writing
Questions That Expose the Gaps
Ask your travel insurer: "Does this policy exclude planned medical treatment and its complications?" Ask the clinic: "If I need revision work, who pays for the procedure, the flights and the hotel?" Ask both: "What happens in the first 72 hours after I land home?" The pattern of answers maps your real coverage.
How Itinerary of Türkiye Helps
We make sure the guarantee document and complication protocol are on the table before you commit, and we stay your point of contact with the clinic during recovery. We do not sell insurance — we make sure you know exactly what is and is not covered before you fly.
